A radon test is either a one-time kit sent to a lab or a digital monitor that shows readings at home. Here is how the main types compare, based on EPA and Health Canada guidance.
Types of radon detectors
| Type | Test length | How you get results | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charcoal canister (short-term kit) | 2 to 7 days | Mail to the lab | A cheap first test, home sales |
| Alpha track (long-term kit) | 90 days to 1 year | Mail to the lab | Your year-round average; Health Canada’s recommended 91-day test |
| Electret ion chamber | Short- or long-term | Read by a professional or lab | Professional testing |
| Continuous radon monitor (professional) | Usually 2+ days, hour-by-hour readings | Report from the tester | Home sales, checking a system |
| Consumer digital monitor | Ongoing | Display or app | Watching trends over time after a lab test |
How to choose
- Start with a lab-analyzed kit. Short-term charcoal kits are the cheapest way to check a home; long-term alpha track kits give the best annual average.
- Use a certified device or tester for a home sale. Look for devices listed by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) or the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) in the U.S., or C-NRPP in Canada.
- Digital monitors are useful for watching changes, for example after a mitigation system is installed, but confirm important decisions with a lab test or a certified professional.
- Check free and low-cost state kits first; see your state page.

Not sure which to buy? If you have never tested, a short-term lab kit is the cheapest start. If the result is 4 pCi/L or higher, follow up with a long-term test or a second short-term test, as the EPA recommends. A digital monitor is useful to watch levels after a mitigation system is installed.
What kits cost
- Short-term kits: about $8 to $15 in Illinois county health departments and hardware stores (Shaw Local, January 2026) and about $20 to $30 in Pennsylvania (PA DEP, 2026).
- University of Georgia program: air kits $15 online or $10 at some county Extension offices; water kits $30 (2024 fact sheet).
- Minnesota: kits sold through the MDH-linked site for $12.95 (MDH, 2025).

Frequently asked questions
Are digital radon detectors accurate?
Consumer monitors can show trends, but the EPA and state programs base decisions on lab-analyzed tests or certified professionals. Use a certified test before deciding to fix a home or during a sale.
Which radon test is most accurate?
A long-term test (more than 90 days) best reflects your year-round average. Health Canada recommends at least 91 days in the heating season.
How much does a radon detector cost?
Short-term lab kits commonly cost about $8 to $30 from state programs and stores; long-term kits and digital monitors cost more.
